During the wondering phase, I have really focused on asking questions. At first, I was not sure what to do for this phase. I decided looked over Dr. Lamb’s materials. I really liked the Wondering Chart (http://www.virtualinquiry.com/inquiry/topic71graph2.pdf). I have saved my chart as a PDF. Here is the path for the file: https://oncourse.iu.edu/access/content/user/chraruss/Wondering%20Table.pdf. I also took advantage of the prompts posted under Finding Purpose on the Wondering Page (http://virtualinquiry.com/inquiry/wondering.htm).
ñ I wonder what cities to visit in CA, where the national parks are located in CA, and how many golf courses are near Pebble Beach.
ñ I like to travel, to see new things, to experience nature and to discover the unexpected.
ñ I dislike things that are out of my control like weather and scheduling.
ñ I am in favor of golfing, touring the seashore, going to Disneyland, and spotting a celebrity.
ñ I am opposed to any of us being sick while traveling, though it almost always happens!
ñ I wish that I could convince my husband that we could afford to go three weeks instead of two.
This little exercise was fun and easy. I like the responses that I had and hope that they will help guide me during the webbing phase.
The great part about choosing California as a destination is that (for the most part) the weather is not a worry!
ReplyDeleteI was unable to access your PDF from Oncourse; is it set as a public file? I'm still learning about the workspace on Oncourse...we have kind of a love-hate relationship... :)
Thanks for the FYI about the PDF file. I did not realize that there was a make public selection. I think that it is fixed and will test it out.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to use you a resource as I move farther into my research. Mostly, I am hoping you could suggest a few 'well-kept secrets' that we should visit? I am pretty open to any area in CA.
I've lived in Thousand Oaks, CA for a brief time, which is about 45 miles north of Los Angeles, so my California knowledge is limited to that area. Some favorites:
ReplyDeleteZuma Beach - a great traditional California beach in Malibu.
Universal Studios - a family favorite!
Marina Del Rey - if you like boating and harbors, it's great. We stayed in a hotel there once and they were filming a soap opera awards show in our hotel!
Hollywood - there are tours and tons of places to visit.
Hope that helps a little!
Listed in the concepts from Callison's Free Inquiry Model for teaching and learning, "Content is driven by questions that students raise and answer (leading to more questions) by exploring resources in the library and beyond, and through interviews" (Callison, 52). I love that all of the inquiry models stress that it is a student driven process. This is crucial if students are to become empowered by the knowledge that they gain. It was true for my experience that the more questions that I answered; the more I discovered to ask. It is a never ending cycle. I think that for younger students, the teacher role would be to offer guidance. I think that young students would struggle with where to stop the questions and begin to focus on one specific issue. I know that it was hard for me.
